Blockbuster Rewind - Independence Day Series (#14)

On the fourteenth episode of Blockbuster Rewind, co-hosts Scott Shifflett, Eric Eells & Andy Atherton discuss Independence Day and it’s sequel Independence Day: Resurgence. And as a bonus they also cover Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks. They go through each of the films and talk about the greatness of the 1996’s ID4 and its great ensemble cast; the outstanding visuals in the films; the incredible one-liners in the first movie; Jeff Goldblum being so Jeff Goldblum; the goose bump-inducing speech by Bill Pullman’s President Whitmore; the good and bad decisions made by world leaders in the films; how Dr. Okun served the first movie and gained such a major role in the sequel; the all-star cast of Mars Attacks having a great time amongst the campiness of the film & whether or not the ID4 franchise should continue.

On the eleventh episode of Blockbuster Rewind, co-hosts Scott Shifflett, Eric Eells & Andy Atherton are joined by their guest Matt Souza to discuss the Major League film series. They go through each of the films and talk about the different characters that make up the teams; the greatness of Bob Uecker’s Harry Doyle; the recasting of Willie Mays Hayes in the sequel; the change of organizations from the Indians to the Twins; the convenient and sometime ridiculous screenwriting & whether or not the series can and should be rebooted. They go through each of the films and talk about the all-star cast of each film; the pluses and minuses of the heists planned by the crews; the terms and banter that permeate the scripts; some of the plot holes that exists in the series; rank the targets and antagonists and discuss if the franchise could be revitalized. On the ninth episode of Blockbuster Rewind, co-hosts Eric Eells, Andy Atherton & Scott Shifflett are joined by guests Bronx Johnny & Tim Capel to discuss the Robocop franchise. They go through each of the films and talk about the unreal amount of violence; the somewhat dystopian future setting; the bad guys and varying degrees of their nefarious and sometimes ridiculous plans; the many actors who early in their careers had roles in the films; the various issues with the scripts, and try to figure out why the sequels and remake exist. Just remember, I’d buy that for a dollar!

They go through each of the films and talk about the incredible introduction of one of the greatest characters in film history; the great action set pieces; traveling by map and the exotic locations Indy travels to; the femme fatales of each film; the villains and their nefarious plots; the somewhat scary scenes in the films; Indy’s brilliance and resilience; the great supporting characters we meet throughout the series; the highs and lows of each film & their thoughts on what we may expect to see in Indy 5.

They go through each of the films and talk about the dazzling special effects; the dystopian world the story takes place in; missed opportunities with some of the characters; lazy screenwriting; the disappointing decline of the movies not just in the box office, but creatively as well; whether or not they would take the red pill or the blue pill. As a bonus, they chat about the 1995 film, Johnny Mnemonic, a movie featuring a hacker dolphin (that’s not a misprint).

They go through each of the films and talk about the villains (and their nefarious plots) of each one; discuss the different actors that played Bruce Wayne/Batman; the memorable lines of dialogue; all of the bat gadgets; the inspired casting for both leads and supporting characters and make comparisons between directors Tim Burton & Joel Schumacher. As a bonus, they chat about the 1966 film, Batman: The Movie.

They go through each of the films and talk about Axel Foley’s detective skills; the relationship between him, Rosewood and Taggart; the minor characters both good and bad; the main villains and their evil plots and the final climatic shootouts. As a bonus, they chat about the 80’s action film, Cobra which has ties to Beverly Hills Cop.

On the second episode of Blockbuster Rewind, co-hosts Andy Atherton, Scott Shifflett & Eric Eells are joined by guest Jennifer Smith to discuss a couple of similar blockbusters that were both released in the summer of 1998: Deep Impact & Armageddon. They go through each of the films and talk about their favorite scenes, best and worst characters, the science facts and fictions, rate the main character deaths, reveal what they would do if faced with the same situations and question some of the ridiculousness that permeates the movies. As a bonus, they chat about a couple of other films in the genre: Melancholia & Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World.
