Pop Goes The Classics - The Rescuers Down Under (1990)

On the twenty-fifth edition of Pop Goes the Classics, Steve Riddle, Andy Atherton, and Mirandia Berthold continue their trek through the Disney animated features with The Rescuers Down Under. The first official sequel in Disney history, the trio discuss it being the first sequel, the US's fascination with Australian culture in the early 1990s, the vast Australian Outback, the majestic beauty of Marahute the eagle, Cody: Boy Adventurer, comparing Percival McLeach and Medusa as villains, the return of Bernard and Miss Bianca and their budding romance, the plights of Wilbur, the cool factor of Jake, the dramatic climax of the film, and whether the film would've worked better if it weren't a "Rescuers" film. So join Steve, Andy, and Mirandia as they have some interesting debates about this film and as the trio continue their trek through the Disney Renaissance.

Pop Goes The Classics - The Little Mermaid (1989)

On the twenty-fourth installment of the Pop Goes The Classics series looking at the Disney animated features, Mirandia Berthold, Andy Atherton & Steve Riddle look at 1989’s, The Little Mermaid. This story is loosely based on the 1837 Danish Hans Christian Anderson fairytale of the same name. Listen as they take a dive, under da sea, to discuss: statues; Ariel’s behavior; where Ursula ranks as an all-time villain; the trio of Flounder, Sebastian & Scuttle and more baffling things they now see as adults. Make sure to stick with them as they talk about all the super fun music that comes from this film and all the core memories they’ve obtained with. And with this film, the Disney animated films renaissance officially begins!

On the twenty-third installment of the Pop Goes The Classics series looking at the Disney animated features, Andy Atherton, Steve Riddle & Mirandia Berthold look at 1988’s Oliver & Company. They discuss the many aspects of the film including: how the adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic is translated in the film; the cast of well-known actors providing the voices; how the movie captures New York City; the modern-day setting; how catchy Billy Joel’s “Why Should I Worry?” is; the obligatory henchmen duo of Roscoe & DeSoto; the bond Dodger and the gang has with each other; the terrifying and ruthless portrayal of Sykes as well as the violence & gruesomeness around his demise and how it is the last release before “the second golden age” of Disney animated films begins.

They discuss the many aspects of the film including: the somewhat scary opening of the film; the casting of the legend Vincent Price as Ratigan; comparisons of Fidget to Creeper; Felicia the cat being Ratigan’s own Rancor creature; the gusto of Olivia; Toby the basset hound; Dawson & Basil as a pairing; the nefarious plan of the “puppet government” & the exciting climax of the film at Big Ben.
